This is a very unusual and extremely good quality cut lead crystal tumbler, made for the Rowland Ward Co. of Nairobi, Kenya.
The tumbler has a cut design extending about two-thirds of the way around the circumference, consisting of a lion flanked by two acacia trees. The cutting is extremely detailed, depicting the lion’s mane, ribs and the folds of his flesh. The base of the tumbler is cut with a series of twelve facets. The base of tumbler is polished out and is marked in the centre with an oval, within which are the words ‘NAIROBI’ and ‘KENYA’ and two other words that are indistinguishable. In the centre there is the head of an impala. This is the etched mark for the Rowland Ward Company.
The tumbler has a height of approximately 9.6cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 7.3cm and at the base of about 4.6cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
